about

"moderation" is a breakup song i wrote as a self-reminder to stop hanging so much of my self-worth on relationships, & to stop building up expectations so high. lots of the "tunes for bears" songs are therapy/catharsis songs like that; writing them helped me decode & exorcise my feelings. i really like the couple of changes of tempo/feel throughout this tune & the front-and-center xylophone.

ben & dane are college buds who played bass & drums in red beard & are all-around great dudes. LOVE the crunchy guitar tone on their cover & that i finally got to hear ben sing! when ben emailed me the final mix, he said: "I'm so grateful that you let Dane and I be a part of this, it was super fun and also quite a challenge for me personally. I've never been one to feel good about my singing voice or musicality on my own and this was a good impetus to push myself to actually record something and get over that hump." well ben nailed it & i can't wait to hear more musical output from him! i'm thankful for his friendship & his cover contribution. check out ben's photography here - www.benmeadors.com

lyrics

oh moderation
unhealthy adoration fuels me
to ignore you like a crying baby
reruns on tv

please stop the blowing
this balloon's simply growing too big
it'll burst and frighten all the kiddies

i struggle with indifference and bitterness
i hope it's helping

and my friends all had it right
when you called me the other night
it should have been the last time
now what i thought wrong was right
and our hopeful first goodbye
but i know you're holding tight

i just want things to return to how they were back then
now words i write in songs they almost make me sick
but i still sing them though i don't know why
strange commitment to how i felt at the time

sooner or later scales must balance out
i want to talk not whispering or shouts
in the end we start at the beginning again
i fall out of love so you can fall back in
